Summary
Stakeholder education and awareness programs increase public understanding of port activities, risks, and sustainability initiatives through outreach and education. This may include, among others, port open days and guided tours, school and university partnerships, public campaigns on safety, environment, or biosecurity, community clean up events (such as litter collection), signage for port users and visitors, and training or awareness programs for local operators.
For ASEAN ports, stakeholder education and awareness can improve safety and environmental behavior, build community pride and ownership, support biosecurity and pollution prevention, encourage responsible use of port facilities, and strengthen long term social licence.
Details
Stakeholder education and awareness build public understanding of ports, their contributions, their impacts, and the steps taken to manage those impacts. Education programs address multiple audiences, including, among others, community members in port adjacent areas, schools and universities, civil society organizations, local media, and visitors. Each audience has different information needs and communication preferences.
Port open days and guided tours provide direct experience of port operations, supporting demystification of port activities and building community connection. During open days, port authorities and operators may showcase sustainability initiatives, safety systems, and community programs, while providing venues for dialogue with community members. Tours may include viewpoints over terminal operations, visits to specific facilities, and interaction with port workers.
School and university partnerships support longer term engagement with students who may be future port workers, community leaders, or simply informed citizens. Programs include, among others, curriculum partnerships with maritime and logistics education, career awareness sessions, scholarship programs, research partnerships with universities, and internship opportunities for students. Long term partnerships build pipelines of talent and community champions.
Public awareness campaigns address specific risks, behaviors, or initiatives. Examples include, among others, safety campaigns for water users around ports, biosecurity awareness for communities in port adjacent areas, environmental campaigns on marine litter and water quality, and community clean up events that combine awareness with practical action. Multi channel campaigns using social media, traditional media, community organizations, and physical signage reach diverse audiences.
In DMC contexts, education and awareness programs must reflect linguistic diversity, varying levels of educational background, and cultural communication norms. Multi language materials, accessible formats, and engagement through trusted community organizations can support effective reach. PSA Singapore, for example, funds bond-free scholarships for Singaporean students from low-income families and takes part in environmental awareness and greening initiatives as part of its community programs (PSA Singapore, n.d.).
