Sabah Ports (Malaysia), Headquarters E-Waste Collection under the Green Port Policy

Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd headquarters, Sabah, MalaysiaGreen Port Policy and Program launched 2017; e-waste collection date not stated

Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) operates eight ports in Sabah. It launched its Green Port Policy and Program in 2017, covering electrification of rubber-tyred gantry cranes, LED lighting upgrades, environmental management plans for all eight ports, and twice-yearly environmental monitoring (WPSP, n.d.a).

Approach

Start with staff awareness. Before collection began, SPSB held an e-waste awareness seminar for management and staff (WPSP, n.d.a).

Run a dedicated collection. SPSB carried out its first ever collection and disposal of electrical and electronic waste (WPSP, n.d.a).

Make office waste part of the green port programme. The e-waste collection sits within the same programme as the port's operational measures (WPSP, n.d.a).

Results

SPSB collected and disposed of 1.02 tonnes of e-waste from its headquarters alone (WPSP, n.d.a). The source does not give the year of the collection, the recycler used, or whether collection continued after the first round.

Transferability

DMC port companies can run the same sequence at low cost: brief staff first, then hold a one-off collection to clear stored electronics from the head office, then repeat it on a regular cycle.

Including office waste in the green port policy, alongside operational measures, signals that the policy applies to the port company's own workplace as well as its terminals.
