Huanghua Port

Huanghua Port, Hebei Province, People's Republic of China.Huanghua Port received the 2021 APSN Green Port Award (China Shenhua Energy, 2021).

Summary:

Huanghua Port is a major coal port on Bohai Bay, with 17 coal berths, two general cargo terminals and one oil terminal (Zhao et al., 2020).

The port received the 2021 GPAS Award. Its green measures include dust suppression technology, shore power, an ecological water system that keeps coal wastewater out of the sea, and wetland restoration (CHN Energy, 2022).

Dust control is a focus: Huanghua Port has constructed enclosed conveyor-belt corridors, a 10,176 m windproof net around all storage yards, and automatic sprinkling at the car dumpers to reduce coal dust emissions; it also uses desalinated water from a power plant as one of its water sources (Fang et al., 2021). Shore power supply has been installed at 11 coal berths (Zhao et al., 2020).

Transferability:

Huanghua shows how a bulk port can be recognized under GPAS for targeted controls on its main impacts. DMC ports that handle coal or other dusty bulk cargo can prioritize enclosed conveyors, windproof netting around stockyards and water sprays, and keep coal-contaminated wastewater out of the sea. The GPAS scorecard gives a structure for choosing these measures, while larger investments such as shore power can be phased in at the busiest berths.
